Inter, self-hosted — no request ever leaves for Google.

Inter v20 is a VARIABLE font: fonts.gstatic.com serves the same
file for every weight from 400 to 800, so one file per subset is
enough. Declaring the range 400..800 lets the browser interpolate
   the five weights this site uses (400, 500, 600, 700, 800).
Weight 300 was requested from Google but is used nowhere.
No italic face: the only italic rule (.board-tba) is dead CSS.

Subsets: latin and latin-ext only. latin-ext carries the accented
   characters the de/fr/it/rm copy needs (à è é ì ò ù ä ö ü ç).

Inter is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

Zodiak, self-hosted — headings only. Fontshare never sees a
   visitor either; font-src stays 'self'.

── SHIPPED UNMODIFIED, ON PURPOSE ──────────────────────

This is Zodiak-Variable.woff2 copied byte for byte out of
Zodiak_Complete/Fonts/WEB/fonts/. It is NOT subsetted and its
tables are NOT edited, because the ITF Free Font License forbids
both without ITF's prior written consent. §02 of Zodiak-FFL.txt:

"You may not modify, edit, adapt, translate, reverse engineer,
decompile, disassemble or otherwise alter the Font Software
[...] This includes modifying or replacing glyphs, subsetting,
format conversion, or altering font names, copyright
information, ownership information or other metadata."

and §05: "You may not create a Derivative Work from the Font
Software without the prior written consent of the Licensor",
where §"Definitions" counts subsetting and metrics changes as
Derivative Work. Self-hosting the unmodified file via @font-face
is explicitly granted (§01), which is what happens here.

So: no latin/latin-ext split the way Inter has one, and no
re-basing of the default instance. One file, 37'352 B, full 381
codepoint charset, one request. If we ever want a subset, that is
an email to ITF, not a build step. The raw download folder stays
out of the deployment; this copy is the deployed artefact.

── CAREFUL: THE WEIGHT AXIS IS OFFSET ──────────────────

Zodiak's named instances do not sit at the wght values their names
imply. Read off the font's own fvar table:

instance actual wght what you would assume
       ---------------------------------------------------
       Thin 100 100 ok
       Light 300 300 ok
       Regular 400 400 ok
       Bold 540.8 700 OFF BY ~160
       Extrabold 700 800 OFF BY 100
       Black 900 900 ok

Two consequences, both easy to trip over:

   1. font-weight: 700 on Zodiak does NOT give you Bold. It gives you
Extrabold — one full step heavier than Inter's 700 at the same
number. The visual match for Inter 700 is wght 540. Pick heading
weights against the axis column above, never against the names.
Fontshare's own zodiak.css hides this by labelling the static
Bold face as 700, so do not use it as a reference either.

   2. The fvar default is 900 (Black), not the usual 400. Anything
that resolves this family WITHOUT an explicit weight lands on
      Black — a bare `font-family: Zodiak` with no font-weight, or a
renderer that ignores the variation axis and draws the default
instance. Every heading in index.html therefore sets its weight
explicitly, and the `font-weight: 100 900` range below keeps the
cascade in charge. Since the file may not be edited (see above),
that discipline in the CSS is the only lever we have.

Playwright's WebKit build on Windows is one renderer that does
exactly this: measured over css weights 100..900, glyph advances
tracked correctly while the ink laid down stayed flat to within
1.6%, i.e. it drew the default instance throughout. The same
measurement on Inter (fvar default 400) in that build is flat to
0.0% across 400..800, so it is a property of that engine build
and not of Zodiak. This has NOT been verified against Safari on
macOS or iOS, and no claim is made about it.

Zodiak is licensed under the ITF Free Font License; the full text
ships alongside as Zodiak-FFL.txt and inside the font's own name
table. Crediting ITF is optional under §01 and we do it here.
